Pupils and staff flourish in body, mind and spirit at Benedict Biscop Church of England Academy in Sunderland, say school inspectors in a new report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a community of loving acceptance, where dignity, forgiveness and restoration are lived out daily, declares the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) report, following a visit to the primary school, part of Northern Lights Learning Trust, in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe curriculum is aspirational and carefully designed to reflect the changing context of the school as the pupil population grows. It fosters rich learning and strong personal development. The values of hope and justice are woven through. These support pupils to become compassionate and thoughtful learners,\u201d the report says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are delighted with the SIAMS report,\u201d said Sarah Armstrong, Headteacher of Benedict Biscop. \u201cInspectors have recognised and accurately captured in their report the commitment we have to all of our pupils. This is a school where the Christian vision is shared, lived and embraced, grounded in the belief that, \u2018With God, all things are possible\u2019, as the report confirms.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report explains that: \u201cLeadership is visionary and courageous. Decisions are made with clarity, rooted in Christian purpose and hope. Strategic planning and professional development equip staff and pupils to flourish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspectors made reference to the school\u2019s \u201creflective response\u201d to the riots in the city last summer, saying that as pupils study diverse role models, global issues and sustainability, these help them understand their place in the world and how to challenge injustice. \u201cThis was seen in their reflective response to the recent riots in Sunderland. Pupils considered how communities can rebuild in hope,\u201d inspectors said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following work with the diocese and support from Northern Lights Learning Trust, spiritual development is comprehensively mapped across subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jo Heaton OBE, Chief Executive of Northern Lights, said: \u201cI am delighted to see the wonderful provision at Benedict Biscop being celebrated. I am proud to see the hard work of the school\u2019s staff and governance, along with the Northern Lights staff and governance, recognised and the special aspects of the Benedict Biscop community celebrated. The Headteacher, Sarah Armstrong, ensures that the school continues to flourish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
